Bamboo vs viscose vs chiffon: choosing a hijab fabric

The fabric decides how a hijab feels, how it drapes and how it's styled. Here is a practical comparison of three common choices. These are general characteristics – individual scarves vary with weight, weave and finish, and everyone's hair and preferences are different.

Bamboo jersey

Bamboo jersey is a knitted fabric made from viscose derived from bamboo, usually with a small amount of elastane for stretch. Ours is 95% viscose (from bamboo), 5% elastane.

The knit gives it a soft, slightly textured surface and a gentle stretch, so it settles around the head rather than sliding across it. That's why many people wear it without pins, though an undercap is a personal choice. It drapes close and softly rather than in loose folds, it's light, and it recovers well from creasing.

Like all viscose fabrics it should be washed cool and kept away from the tumble dryer.

Viscose (woven)

Viscose is a fibre made from wood pulp. Woven viscose scarves are soft with a fluid, flowing drape and a smooth surface. They are usually opaque and come in a wide range of colours and prices.

The smooth surface means there is less grip than a knitted jersey, so an undercap and a pin or two are commonly used to keep everything in place. Woven viscose has little stretch and can crease more than jersey, and it needs the same cool, gentle washing.

Chiffon

Chiffon is a fine, lightweight woven fabric with a slightly crisp hand and an airy drape. It is popular for occasions and layered looks because it holds shape in folds and is often semi-sheer, so it's frequently worn over an undercap or a second layer.

Because the surface is smooth and there is no stretch, chiffon is usually styled with an undercap and pins. It is delicate: wash by hand or on a gentle cycle and keep it away from anything that can snag it.

Which one should you choose?

For everyday, all-day wear many prefer a jersey fabric with some stretch and grip, so there is less to adjust during the day. Bamboo jersey is our choice for exactly this reason.

If you like a flowing drape and don't mind an undercap and a pin, woven viscose is a good everyday option with a lot of variety.

For an occasion or a layered look, chiffon gives a light, elegant finish – plan for an undercap and pins.

There is no single best fabric; it depends on how you wrap, your hair and what the day looks like. Many people keep more than one type.

A note on "bamboo" labelling

Viscose from bamboo is a regenerated cellulose fibre: bamboo is the raw material, but the finished fibre is viscose. Under EU textile labelling rules it should be described as "viscose (from bamboo)" rather than simply "bamboo", and that's how we label our fabric: 95% viscose (from bamboo), 5% elastane.
