Care Guide
Our hijabs and khimars are 95% viscose (from bamboo), 5% elastane. Bamboo jersey is soft and easy to care for, but it prefers low temperatures and gentle handling. A few simple habits keep the softness, colour and shape for a long time.
At a glance
- Hand wash, or use a hand wash cycle in a laundry bag
- Wash separately or with similar fabrics; wash dark colours separately the first few times
- No fabric softener, no bleach
- Hang to dry – do not tumble dry
- Steam rather than iron
- Store folded
Washing
To preserve the quality and softness of the fabric, we recommend hand washing. Alternatively, use a hand wash cycle in a laundry bag. Wash separately or with similar fabrics. Hang to dry and do not tumble dry.
If you use the hand wash cycle, turn the piece inside out and place it in a laundry bag – knitted jersey can catch on zips and hooks. Use a mild liquid detergent, less than you would for a normal load, and wash Black and Deep Olive separately the first few times.
Skip fabric softener. It leaves a coating on the fibre that makes the fabric feel slippery and takes away the natural grip that keeps the hijab in place. No bleach.
Take the piece out of the machine as soon as the cycle finishes.
Drying
Do not tumble dry. Heat and friction are what wear the fabric out and cause shrinking and pilling.
Gently press out excess water – don't wring. Hang to dry over a wide bar, or lay flat on a towel. Avoid narrow hangers and pegs, which can leave marks, and keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from radiators so the colour stays even.
Steaming and ironing
Bamboo jersey rarely creases much. If it does, a steamer is the best option: hold it a few centimetres from the fabric and work downwards. Hanging the piece in the bathroom while you shower also works for light creases.
If you need to iron, use the lowest setting with a thin cloth in between and no pressure. Direct heat and pressure can leave shiny patches on viscose.
Storage
Store folded or rolled in a drawer or on a shelf. Hanging a khimar for long periods can stretch the face opening and the length over time. Make sure the piece is completely dry before you put it away, and avoid keeping it in plastic.
If it starts to pill
Small pills come from everyday friction – a bag strap, a seat belt, a collar. Don't pull them off by hand. Lay the piece flat and use a fabric shaver, moving gently across the surface without stretching the fabric.
